Abstract |
In 1857, a committee of the Legislative Assembly of the Canadas was appointed to investigate the problem of emigration from Canada East (Quebec). The committee's report addressed three problems it ascertained was leading to the emigration problem: the need for manufactures, the need for better roads, and the need to remedy serious problems relating to land holding and land use. The author examines how the committee approached the problem of land holding and land use in Canada East, what recommendations it made, and how the recommendations were received.
