Socio-Economic Background and Legislative Behaviour: An Analytical Approach to the Lower Canadian Assembly, 1820-1837
|
| Abstract |
A quantitative study of the historiographical debate over whether the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838 were clashes of rival nationalisms, ideologies or classes. Using three socio-economic factors - ethnicity, occupation, and access to patronage - as well as voting patterns, the author concludes that ethnicity was a principal predictor of political affiliation in the Assemblies of 1820 and 1837. However, no firm conclusions regarding the historiographical debate is determined.
