Sovereignty at an Impasse: The Highs and Lows of Quebec Nationalism
|
Abstract |
The author argues that the decline in the desire for sovereignty within Quebec can be traced to the following reasons: the significant economic, social and cultural progress since the 1960s means Quebecers’ standard of living has caught up to that of the rest of Canada; Anglophone-Francophone linguistic tensions within the province have calmed considerably; Quebec enjoys a large measure of autonomy, because Canada is one of the most decentralized federations in the world; and Quebecers have become more cynical of grand political projects.
