Abstract |
Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer (1775-1850), the 5th Baron Aylmer, a soldier by training, took over the position of governor of Lower Canada in 1831 with no political or civil administration experience. His relations with the French-dominated Legislative Assembly led Louis-Joseph Papineau and his Patriote party to demand, in its 92 Resolutions, for Aylmer's recall. At Aylmer's suggestion, a three-man Commission was sent to Lower Canada by the Colonial Office in 1835 to investigate the Assembly's complaint against him. But the Colonial Office had already decided to replace Aylmer with the head of the Commission, Lord Gosford.
