| Abstract |
The history and various occupants of Cataraqui estate, today known as Domaine Cataraqui, situated in the Sillery neighbourhood of Quebec City. The house was originally built in 1851 for Henry Burstall (1804-1866) and his wife Elizabeth Blenkin (1811-1876), and was designed by Quebec architect Edward Staveley (1795-1872). For a brief period in the 1860s, the house served as the Governor General’s residence. In 1873, Charles Eleazar Levey purchased Cataraqui estate, and in 1905 it was purchased at auction by Godfrey William Rhodes. The estate remained a private home until 1972, and today belongs to the provincial government.
