The Making of Westmount, Quebec, 1870-1929: A Study of Landscape and Community Construction
|
Abstract |
An analysis of the development of the Montreal suburb of Westmount from 1871 to 1929, when it grew from a quiet rural area into Quebec’s foremost Anglophone elite inner-city residential municipality. The author sets the making of Westmount within the context of Montreal’s rapid nineteenth century industrialization, which created massive wealth for the city’s business elite. Westmount became a ‘model’ community where the predominately English-speaking businessmen, by careful and pioneering use of municipal bylaws, were able to govern land use and social conduct different from neighbouring Montreal.
