Abstract |
Using the pen name "Pro Patria", the Scottish-born David Chisholme (1796-1842) outlined in this book his views of the political and social relations in Quebec in the early nineteenth century. From 1823 to 1824, and from 1837 to 1842, Chisholme served as editor of the Montreal Gazette. As a political tory and anti-reformer, Chisholme strongly opposed Louis-Joseph Papineau and defended any action by Governor Dalhousie. The Lower Canada Watchman is a series of 13 political essays first published in the Kingston Chronicle in 1828–29.
