The Quebec Provincial Election of 1944: An Analysis of the Role of the Election in the Democratic Process
|
Abstract |
An examination of the war-time 1944 Quebec provincial general election in the Montreal area to determine the role of elections in the democratic process. Maurice Duplessis's Union Nationale Party defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Adélard Godbout. Godbout had supported Prime Minister Mackenzie King in the conscription crisis earlier that year. It was the first time in a Quebec provincial election that women were allowed to vote. The author makes a comparison between party appeals in the city's English-speaking constituencies and French-speaking constituencies.
