The Reasons Why the British Conservatives Voted Against the Boucherville Ministry
|
Abstract |
A pamphlet criticizing the financial policies of the Conservative administration of Charles-Eugène Boucher de Boucherville, Premier of Quebec from 1874 to 1878. The author was the provincial member for Argenteuil. The "British Conservatives" mentioned in the title of the pamphlet were the members for Megantic, Brome, Drummond, Arthabaska and Argenteuil. Among the author's criticisms of the de Boucherville government was his charge that the large railway subsidies given by the Premier had increased the provincial debt, stimulated reckless speculation, and facilitated the formation of "railway rings, powerful enough to menace the existence of the government of the day, unless their demands be conceded."
