| Abstract |
The author presents evidence (circa late-1970s) on the demographic and socio-economic situation of Quebec Francophones. He notes that the demographic evidence indicates that Bill 101, the Charter of the French Language, appears likely to have the effect of rising the Francophones’ share of the population of Montreal, but that recent studies of projected enrollment in English-speaking school boards in Montreal appear to have overestimated the decline in enrollment. He further notes that economic evidence indicates that the share of the manufacturing sector owned by Francophones have increased from 1961 to 1974 and that the difference in mean income between Anglophones and Francophones has declined from 1961 to 1977. The mean income appeared to be of the order of 15 – 20 percent for men while they were in the order of 50 –55 percent in 1961 and 28 – 33 percent in 1970. The author concludes that the closure of the economic gap appears to be more the result of the gains of bilingual Francophones than of unilingual Francophones.
