Abstract |
The authors point out that Montreal's urban space provides an illustration of the increasing fluidity of new territorial configurations emerging from changes in the settlement of immigrants in large cities. They explain that different waves of immigration have left an imprint on Montreal neighborhoods: at first dividing along linguistic lines, ethnic communities formed, followed by multiethnic ones. Though some neighborhoods still retain their ethnic flavor through the presence of community institutions - particularly places of worship, ethnic parks, and festivals — the members of these communities now move more freely within the entire city. The authors argue that this evolution poses new challenges to researchers trying to define the boundaries of these ethnic areas.
