Abstract |
An analysis of the 1961 census economic data and two other studies in the 1970s to determine the relationship between language and income in the Montreal metropolitan region. The author compares the 1961 data used in 1963 by the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism with the data used by the 1971 Gendron Commission and with a 1976 study undertaken by the Montreal Star. The author explains that according to the data taken from the 1961 Canadian census, members of the Montreal's Jewish community had the best income in Quebec. The English (sic) ethnic group came second, followed by various Allophone groups, then came the French speakers and Italians, these last two ethnic groups having much lower than average income. According to a study carried out in 1971 by the Gendron Commission, the proportion of positions held by Anglophones was increasing
as incomes rise. However, the author points out that this study was based on a sample of company employees and he did not know what was the relationship between this sample
and the entire population. Finally, the 1976 study carried out by the Montreal Star revealed significant income disparities in favor of Anglophones, but it suggested, however, that the gap between Anglophones and Francophones was being bridged.
