Abstract |
In 1865, Montreal financier Mathew Hamilton Gault (1822-1887) organized a syndicate of Montreal bankers and merchants who petitioned government for a charter of incorporation for the Sun Insurance Company of Montreal. The company commenced operations on December 27, 1871. In 1882, the company was re-named the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. The author outlines the history of this financial institution that by the early twentieth century had expanded into one of the largest national and international life insurance companies in the world. On January 6, 1978, the company downsized its Montreal facilities to serve as a branch service bureau while shifting its head office to Toronto.
