Succession Process in a Large Canadian Family Business: A Longitudinal Case Study of the Molson Family Business, 1786-2007
|
Abstract |
An examination of the successful multi-generational succession process in the Montreal-based Molson family business. The author identifies and evaluates the critical events and processes that have led to several family business successions over six generations in the Molson family business. The author discovered that by ensuring grooming of the offspring, a mutual role adjustment between the older and younger generations, and selection of next-generation leader based on abilities and competencies, the Molson family business has survived for over 220 years. Effective succession planning in this family business also involves minimizing conflicts and being able to separate the family and business systems.
