| Abstract |
Using 1971 census data, the authors found that English mother tongue groups in Montreal had higher achievement levels than their background characteristics would predict. Bilingualism was associated with higher achievements for most groups, except for the English language groups. For Allophones, bilingualism was associated with higher attainments, but the acquisition of English was associated with higher achievements than was the acquisition of French. Integration into the English language group was associated with higher achievements than just learning English, leading the authors to conclude that the data conforms to a network theory of occupational achievement.
