Abstract
A study of the so-called "Jersey system" of credit established in Gaspésie by Anglo-Norman merchants from Jersey and Guernsey in the nineteenth century. Under this exploitative system of credit, the merchant company set both the value of the products traded and that of the product received (the fish), as well as being the sole custodian of food reserves. Charles Robin & Company was the most powerful company utilizing this credit system that kept Gaspé fishermen in debt to the company for generations. The author describes the stores that today are museums that existed under this indentured capitalist system.
