| Abstract |
Notre Dame Street underwent significant change at the turn of the twentieth century, from being the main street in a small town on the outskirts of Montreal to a principal commercial street of a bustling industrial city. During this period, class and ethnic tensions intensified. Among the tensions was a labour dispute in 1891 at Merchants Manufacturing, a textile factory, and the 1897 protest over the refusal of George A. Drummond to pay his municipal taxes.
