Abstract |
A brief biography of James MacLaren (1818-1892), a key nineteenth-century figure in the economic and social development of the Outaouais region of Quebec, particularly in the region of the Basse-Lièvre Valley. The Scottish-born MacLaren immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1821, and in 1865 he founded the James MacLaren & Company, a timber and saw mill enterprise based in Buckingham, in the Basse-Lièvre Valley. While wood was the main industry in which MacLaren invested, he also founded and was President of the Bank of Ottawa, and invested in mining, railways, and local real estate. His company's archives are located in the Gatineau offices of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.
