Abstract |
A study of the assimilation process of Italian and Finnish immigrants in Montreal during the 1930s depression. According to the author, the Italians, of agricultural backgrounds, had settled near the periphery of Montreal. They were employed in the building trades, dock labour, and factory trades and exhibited a strong family unity. He claimed that they were assimilating slowly towards the Francophone community. The author claimed that the Finnish men were migratory. Their employment was largely in the lumbering, mining, farming and building industries. The women were domestic servants. The Finns had settled in a downtown Montreal area. He claimed that they were assimilating quickly towards the Anglophone community.
