The Vicissitudes of Family Business
|
Abstract |
A case study of the creation and demise of the Montreal-based Steinberg grocery store and real estate empire, founded in 1917 as a corner strore at 4423 St. Lawrence Boulevard by Jewish-Hungarian immigrant Ida Steinberg (1883-1942), and transformed into a multi-million dollar family-owned business with stores throughout Quebec and Ontario by her son, Sam Steinberg (1905-1978). Disagreement among Sam's three children after his death led to the sale of the family grocery store business in 1989, and the Steinberg family name disappeared from the stores in 1992 when the company went bankrupt.
