Internal Dynamics and International Cycles: Questions of the Transition in Montreal, 1821-1828
|
Abstract |
The author argues that the heart of Montreal's economy in the 1820s was in the manufacturing and artisanal sectors, which produced for the local and not the international market. The author challenges the historiography on the role and significance of merchant capital in the development of Montreal. He shows that the internal dynamics of capitalist development were more important than international factors in the socio-economic changes that later resulted in an industrial revolution in the city.
