Title
The Evolution of a Fall Line Settlement, Buckingham, Quebec
Abstract
In 1799 the area that included the town of Buckingham, in West Quebec, was granted to John Robertson, a former British soldier. British and American settlers began moving into Buckingham in 1823. Throughout its history, the city of Buckingham's economy has been dominated by the MacLaren family. The MacLaren's, who have resided in the region since 1840, dominated the lumber industry in West Quebec. Once predominately English-speaking, today less than a quarter of the town is of Anglophone origins. In 2002, Buckingham was amalgamated into the City of Gatineau.
