Abstract |
An examination of the immigrants and migrants in search of a better life who flooded into Montreal in the nineteenth century. Using census data, the authors trace the lives of twelve families over the period studied, including their births, deaths, marriages, moves, comings and goings, to demonstrate the importance of individual decisions on where to move, when to marry and what work to do. Integrating social and spatial analysis, the authors provide insights into relationships among the city's three cultural communities (Irish Catholic, Anglo-Protestant and French Catholic), and show how inequalities of voice, purchasing power and access to real property were maintained.
