| Abstract |
Dow Breweries was founded in Montreal by William Dow (1800-1868) in 1861. Its roots, however, can be traced back to 1790 when a farmer named Thomas Dunn started brewing beer in La Prairie for travellers on their way from Montreal to New York. Dow Brewery later bought out the Boswell Brewing Company in Quebec City in 1952. Dow Ale was the number one selling beer in Quebec until 1965, but its sales plummeted after the "tainted beer scandal" that saw twenty Dow Ale drinkers die as a result of the Quebec City plant adding high doses of cobalt sulfate to the beer for foam stability.
