Abstract |
In the heart of Montreal's old Jewish quarter a small house of worship has been slowly fading since the Jewish community moved further west in the city or out of the province. The Beth Schloïme Synagogue, sometimes referred to as the Bagg Street Shul, has occupied this modest brick building at 3919 Clark Street, at the corner of Bagg Street, in the city's Plateau district, since the early 1920s. The red-brick duplex was constructed in 1899, and the congregation moved there in 1922. The Jewish community of Montreal's Plateau district supported at least a dozen synagogues at its peak. Today, the Beth Schloïme Synagogue is the last remaining.
