| Abstract |
Sir William Macdonald's (1831-1917) contributions to McGill University transformed it into one of the world's foremost research and teaching institutions. Macdonald was a tobacco merchant in Montreal and by 1885 may have been the richest person in Canada. McGill University evolved, largely through Macdonald's financial contributions, from an impoverished institution into an intellectual powerhouse. Macdonald served on McGill's Board of Governors for over thirty years.
