Les Chinois à Montréal 1877-1951
Abstract
A history of the establishment of the Chinese community in Montreal, and the discrimination that Montrealers of Chinese origin faced in the city. The years studied by the author covers the period just before 1885, the year Parliament enacted the Chinese Immigration Act placing a fixed fee (Head Tax) on Chinese immigrants to discourage their immigration, to just after 1947, the year that Parliament revoked the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923 that prohibited all Chinese immigration into Canada. Between 1877 and 1951, some 4,000 Chinese immigrated to Quebec, some from British Columbia and the rest from southern China. Most came to Montreal.
