Les buandiers chinois de Montréal au tournant du siècle
|
Abstract |
A study of the immigration of thousands of men from southern China who, between 1891 and 1901, arrived in Montreal, and the reaction of Montrealers to this influx. Most of these men had been poor farmers in their homeland, and their intention in coming to Canada was to earn money and return home. Because of the strong nativist and racist reaction of Canadians, most of these men worked in Chinese laundaries in the city. They used their assets, experience and networks of kinship in the creation of businesses requiring little capital and minimum contacts with the white population.
