Abstract |
A study of the evolving image of Jews in twentieth-century French-Quebec literature, an image that only improved after the Second World War. The author points out that prior to the war, French-Canadian contact with Jews was limited to superficial relationships, mainly with Jewish merchants, and Jewish characters were thus characterized as merchants in Francophone novels. After the war, Francophone novelists gave their Jewish characters a symbolic meaning. The Jew now embodied human suffering. The author contends that because this conception is broader, it allows writers to identify with the image of the Jews they portrayed.
