Abstract |
A outline of nineteenth-century American novelist and poet Herman Melville's (1819-1891) visit to Montreal in December 1857. Invited by the Montreal Mercantile Library Association, the author of Moby Dick gave a lecture titled "Statutes of Rome", where he sought to lead the audience through the gates of Rome into the twin worlds of art and the ancient past. The lecture was less than well appreciated as evidenced by the reviews in most of Montreal's newspapers.
