Searching for English Quebec History : A 40-Year Odyssey
|
Abstract |
The author notes that until the 1980s, English Quebecers did not have a history. He points out that until that time English-speaking Quebecers saw themselves as English Canadians living in Quebec. Their history was viewed as included within the broader history of English Canada, separate from “Québec history.” The author explains how his online bibliography on English-speaking Quebec came about as a response to the election of the Parti Québécois, the enactment of Bill 101, and the general lack of knowledge of English Quebec history by both Anglo- and Franco-Quebecers. Through the lens of the bibliography, he looks at the academic development of “English Quebec studies” in the wake of Bill 101, and the later demise of the field seen through the apparent indifference within Quebec’s English-language universities to the teaching of English Quebec history.
