Abstract |
The author points out that for more than a century, the Mile End district of Montreal was mostly a transit point, a buffer zone stuck between the French-Canadian East and the Anglo-Protestant West, crossed by the "Main" and Park Avenue. Formerly associated with poverty, it was also a space of social and cultural mixing where the imprint of several generations of immigrants is still visible. One of the large landowners in the district in the early nineteenth century was the Bagg family, after whom Bagg Street, Clark Street and Fairmount Street are named. It was also an important Jewish neighbourhood, immortalized in many of the novels by Mordecai Richler. One of the important landmarks in the Mile End is St. Michael's and St. Anthony's Catholic Church, originally named the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. The church was built in 1915 using a Byzantine architectural style, popular with the Pope of the day, to accommodate what was to become the largest English-speaking Irish Catholic parish at that time in what was then a predominately Irish neighbourhood.

See also the author's website "Mémoire du Mile End Memories" that explains how Stanley Bagg (1788-1853) and the Beaubien family played an essential role in the transformation of a rural space into an early Montreal suburb. Section 3.1 of the website, titled "John Clark, butcher, and Stanley Bagg, merchant," by Justin Bur, explains how, in 1810, Stanley Bagg and his brother Phineas signed a five-year lease with John Clark (1767-1827) to rent a tavern, located at the northwest corner of what is today St. Laurent Boulevard and Mont-Royal Avenue, called the "Mile End." This is the first known written occurrence of the name "Mile End" in Montreal. https://memoire.mile-end.qc.ca/en/le-boucher-john-clark-et-le-marchand-stanley-bagg/ |
