Representations of Muslim Women in the Quebec News Print Media
|
Abstract |
The author argues that the news print media in Quebec construct representations of Muslim women which are harmful to their identities. She examines the case of the portrayal of Muslim women in the Gazette and La Presse, two dailies in Montreal, as illustrative of how a dominant group can influence how "Others" within society are perceived. Negative or harmful representations present Muslim women as one-dimensional victims of a traditional way of life which contrasts sharply to our Western democratic norms and standards. The author labels this portrayal as a hidden and very subtle form of racism.
