Abstract |
A brief study of the "Canadian Jewish experience" during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, outlining how the character of Canada's Jewish community was shaped by the country's constitutional structure, political life, national composition, urban patterns, and economic development. About half of Canada's Jewish population lived in Montreal where French and English anti-Semitism contributed to the emergence of national organizations stressing defensiveness and an enthusiasm for Jewish nationalism in the Zionist movement.
