Ethnic Partition of the Work Force in 1840s Montreal
|
Abstract |
Using the 1842 census, tax rolls and city directories, the author examines the labour force breakdown of Irish Catholics, Irish Protestants, French-Canadian Catholics and Anglo-Protestants in mid-1840s Montreal. She concludes that the position in the labour force occupied by Irish Catholics was strategic and crucial to understanding their social advancement through their association with both the Protestant elite and French Catholic community.
