Abstract |
The author examines the mid-nineteenth century trial of photographer's assistant Robert Notman (1837-1882) for helping his lover, Margaret Galbraith, secure an abortion from physician Alfred Patton in Montreal. The author explains Patton's suicide following the procedure, as well as Notman's trial and sentence of ten years hard labour for procuring the abortion. Notman was the brother of Montreal photographer William Notman (1826-1891).
