| Abstract |
The authors compare the slowness of Université Laval to embrace sports and athleticism in the nineteenth century compared to Anglophone universities, such as Montreal's McGill University. The authors maintain that Francophone universities in Quebec were dedicated to the establishment of a Christian elite, favouring the intellectual and spiritual activities of students. Sport in the nineteenth century appeared as a foreign cultural practice transplanted in Quebec by the British military and relayed by the English-speaking bourgeoisie. Organized sport, therefore, was first and foremost seen by the Francophone elite as a distinguishing feature of the conqueror.
