Peintres juifs de Montréal : témoins de leur époque, 1930-1948

Abstract |
The author points out that Jewish Montreal painters of the 1930s and 1940s were unique witnesses of their time. They depicted the city in which they lived, the lives of the working classes, but also the misery engendered by the Depression of the 1930s. Several also represented the conflicts with the rise of fascism and the Second World War. The author also points out that these artists explored the various facets of the contemporary human figure as part of a new understanding of modernity within the Canadian artistic scene.
