Abstract |
The author proposes a new understanding of bourgeois portraits in Lower Canada between 1790 and 1830. She argues that the presentation of the various links between the modes of "social representation" of the bourgeoisie and their aspirations helps us to understand the portrait as a reflection of Lower Canadian society and its values. The bourgeoisie is defined by the author as representing the British officer class, the French-speaking seigneurial elite, the English-speaking merchant elite, the French-speaking middle class (doctors, lawyers, notaries), and the clergy.
