Bourgeois Visions of Urban Space in Nineteenth-Century Quebec
|
Abstract |
An intergenerational study of two prominent nineteenth century Quebec families -- the McCords and the Taschereaus. The author's focus on the McCords concentrates on John Samuel McCord (1801-1865) and includes an examination of the "spatial considerations" of the third generation of the Montreal elite family led by James Samuel McCord. In 1837, McCord began construction of the family's Temple Grove estate on the slope of Mount Royal and, according to the author, became the central figure in determining the institutional forms that Mount Royal would take -- suburban estates, cemetery, and The Boulevard.
