La semaine annuelle de musique de Montréal sous les auspices du Delphic Study Club, 1923–1937
|
Abstract |
The author examines the background that led to the annual Music-Week in Montreal between 1923 and 1937, put on by the English-speaking women's Delphic Study Club. She notes that the club was founded in 1919 by a Mrs. Elizabeth Griswold Waycott. The author provides information on the Music Week staff, its sponsors, financial grants, concert venues, performers, repertory, and lecturers, as well as press reviews of its concerts. The author emphasizes the Anglophone-Francophone cultural dualism of the Music Week organizers and performers, and highlights the active role of women in the running of organizations designed to spread music appreciation in Quebec.
