Meighen and the Montreal Tycoons: Railway Policy in the Election of 1921
|
Abstract |
An examination of Montreal's predominately English-speaking financiers' dislike of Arthur Meighen, the leader of the federal Conservative Party in the 1920s and Prime Minister from July 1920 to December 1921, and from June 1926 to September 1926. Two of Montreal's English-language newspapers, the more sensational Montreal Daily Star and the more sedate The Gazette, also both opposed Meighen's leadership of the party. The basis of the dislike was Meighen's railway policy, and the possible nationalization of the Montreal-based Canadian Pacific Railway.
