Abstract |
The Scottish-born Duncan McNab McEachran (1841-1924) founded the Montreal Veterinary School in 1866, the first veterinary school in Quebec. In 1873, the school changed its name to the Montreal Veterinary College, attracting students from throughout North America. In 1877, the college opened a section for Francophone students and in 1885, one of McEachran's graduates opened the École de medicine vétérinaire de Montréal and another opened the École vétérinaire de Québec. In 1889, the Montreal Veterinary College was incorporated into McGill University. McGill became the first university in North America to offer a degree in veterinary medicine.
