Abstract |
The Montreal Ocean Steamship Company was established in 1854 by Montrealer Hugh Allan (1810-1882) as part of the Allan Shipping Line. In 1856, the company ousted Samuel Cunard to take control of the Royal Mail contract between Britain and North America. The Montreal Steamship Company's benevolent society was established in Liverpool in 1863 to aid seamen, shipping staff, and their relatives in the event of injury or death.
