| Abstract |
A pictorial history of Compton. Compton was first settled by English-speaking farmers, merchants and artisans at the end of the eighteenth century, and by 1815 there were approximately 700 families living in the area. Francophone settlers, mainly from the Beauce region, moved into the area after 1850. Emphasis of this book is placed on the St-Laurent family, where Prime Minister Louis S. St-Laurent was born in 1882. The St-Laurents were a bilingual, bi-cultural family. There home in Compton is a National Historic Site operated by Parks Canada.
