La perception de la situation linguistique par les Québécois : analyse des résultats d'un sondage effectué en octobre 1985

Abstract |
The author analyzes the 1985 survey on the use of French in everyday activities in Quebec, and the state of bilingualism among Anglophones and Allophones to participate in these everyday activities. The author concludes from the survey that Anglophones felt threatened by the legislated dominance of French, thus hindering their integration into French Quebec society. He points out that only a quarter of the Anglophones surveyed agreed that French should become the language of work and commerce in Quebec. The survey also found that Anglophone consumption of French-language cultural products (music, films, books, radio, television) was low, and they did not seem to estimate them very highly. Even though they said that they were predominantly bilingual, sixty percent of the Anglophones surveyed said they use only or almost always English in their contacts with Francophones. The survey found that Allophones were more attracted to English than to French, and they shared the point of view of Anglophones with regard to language policies, that is, they wanted fewer constraints.
