No ESL in English Schools: Language Policy in Quebec and Implications for TESL Teacher Education
|
Abstract |
An examination of how Quebec's official language policy interacts with contested and contesting ideologies, as experienced by novice teachers teaching English as a second language (TESL) within the majority French school system in the province. The context of TESL training in Quebec is described, focusing on legislative policy and the status of English in schools. The author discusses the problems encountered by students in McGill University's Bachelor's of Education in TESL program during their student-teaching practicum. Among the problems outlined are ambivalent or hostile attitudes towards English on the part of students and other teachers in schools; (non) use English in the ESL classrooms; low motivation of ESL students; and the nature of English language and culture in Quebec.
