Remaking Richler for French Canada: Translation as Remaniement
|
Abstract |
An examination of how Lori Saint-Martin and Paul Gagné approached the French translation of Mordecai Richler's novels for Montreal's Les Éditions du Boréal and at the same time, by Paris' les Éditions du Sous-sol. A number of Richler's novels had been earlier translated in France, to less than critical acclaim. The Saint-Martin/Gagné translations appeared as: Solomon Gursky et Joshua, 2015; L’Apprentissage de Duddy Kravitz et Le Cavalier de Saint-Urbain, 2016; Le Monde selon Barney, 2017. Son of a Smaller Hero (Fils d’un tout petit héros) will be published in 2022.
