Abstract |
A brief study of the population patterns of Montreal in 1861. The population of the city that year was 90,323, up from 57,715 in 1852. In 1861, 49 percent of the population was either born in Great Britain (England, Scotland, but mostly Ireland) or were born in Lower Canada of British descent. This was a decrease from 1852 when 53 percent of the population were either born in Great Britain or of British descent. Meanwhile, the French-Canadian population of the city was increasing, from 45 percent in 1852 to 48 percent in 1861.
