Les domestiques dans les villes canadiennes au XIXe siècle : effectifs et conditions de vie
|
Abstract |
A study of the ethnic and demographic distribution, as well as the living and working conditions, of live-in servants in nineteenth-century Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, and Halifax. Montreal's predominantly English-speaking St. Antoine district had more live-in servants than any of the other cities. Using the 1871 census data, the author shows that Irish women dominated domestic service in Montreal, Toronto and Halifax. In Quebec City, French Canadian women predominated domestic service, followed by Irish women.
